Welcome to this edition of The Standard

What role do patients have in ensuring safe care? We commissioned research to find out more about their views. You can read the report we have just published.

Welcome to this edition of The Standard. In March we asked 'What makes a good regulator?' This was the main theme for our 2019 academic and research conference organised in collaboration with Professor Deborah Bowman. You can read more about the conference as well as watch short clips from some of our delegates to see how they answered this question.

Two of our recent appeals have been upheld by the High Court. One appeal involved two NMC registrants who failed to assess a vulnerable patient who then went on to complete suicide. The registrants subsequently lied about it at both the internal and coroner's investigation; the other appeal related to a nurse involved in a sexual relationship with a vulnerable patient.

What makes a good regulator?' The question posed at our most recent academic and research conference - find out more in this issue and watch our Chief Executive explain how research can help to improve professional regulation. What role do patients have in ensuring safe care? Read our latest research report which asked members of the public this question.

How clued up are you about the risks of cosmetic procedures. We are supporting the Department of Health and Social Care's campaign to raise awareness. We recently held a seminar for Accredited Registers focusing on the theme of risk - we had a range of speakers during the day and will look to hold further seminars in the future.

Have you missed any of our blogs? Catch up here. Guest blogger Deanna Williams asks 'Good ….or good enough? As a regulator where do you fit?' and captures some of the views she shared in a Q&A at our recent academic conference. Or read the guest blog from Denham Phipps about bringing practitioners and their work together: human factors in health and social care regulation.

Our regular round-up from the regulators, including their current consultations with details and deadlines.
