In this issue

Welcome to this edition of The Standard

Welcome to our new Chair. Caroline Corby took up her position as Chair of the Authority's Board on 1 February. We are looking forward to working with Caroline in what is promising to be a changing and challenging time. You can find out more about Caroline's appointment here.

This is the third time this newsletter has been sent out under a lockdown and each time we have hoped that the situation will be better. This time it possibly is with the roll-out of the vaccine, but we hope that you are keeping well and want to again express our continuing support and gratitude for all those working in health and care - as well as other key workers - who are helping us get through this pandemic.

Since our last newsletter, the Government has published a White Paper on a Health and Care Bill. The White Paper proposes far-reaching changes to reform the NHS and social care, but also includes further proposals for reform of health and care professional regulation to promote a proportionate, risk-based approach. So we will be watching this space with interest. You can read our initial response here.

We review about 3,000 final fitness to practise decisions every year, but appeal around 10 cases. This seems like a small statistic but the impact of these appeals has a greater significance - preventing registrants who may pose a risk from returning to practise too soon, but also creating case law and helping to clarify the process - read the results of some of our latest appeals. You can also find out how the GDC and HCPC are meeting our Standards of Good Regulation in our most recent reviews.

What lessons can we learn from how the regulatory system responded to the pandemic? How can this help regulators respond to the ongoing situation and any crises that may arise in the future? Our Covid-19 lessons learnt report is due to be published in early Spring and aims to answer these questions. We also have several research projects on the go and are hoping to publish the resulting reports soon.

Our consultation on the future shape of the Accredited Registers programme closed in mid February. We had around 90 responses from a range of stakeholders across the UK including NHS bodies, charities representing patients, employers, current and prospective registers, and members of the public. We are busy analysing the results and hope to publish a report in Spring.

Have you missed any of our blogs? Catch up here - recent blogs have looked at personal perspectives on International Women's Day and LBQT+ History Month. We continue our series of guest blogs examining the impact of the pandemic across the four nations of the UK - with a blog from Healthcare Improvement Scotland.

This continues to be not quite our usual round-up about regulators' consultations and reports recently published (though there are a few of those too). Instead we continue to give details and links to all their Covid-19-related website hubs which include the latest updates, information and advice for registrants, students, employers and the public.
