Welcome to this edition of The Standard

Welcome to our new Chair

We welcomed our new Chair Dame Glenys Stacey DBE in April. Dame Glenys has a wealth of experience in leadership and management roles in both the regulatory and standards fields. Find out more or read Dame Glenys' bio on our website.

The world seems like a very different place since we sent out our last newsletter – even though it was just a few months ago. We hope that you are keeping safe and can excuse the longer than usual gap since that newsletter.

Covid-19 will undoubtedly have a long-lasting impact on all sections of our society and on every one's daily lives, but its effect on patients, the health and care professionals treating them and the regulators who register them was immediate. Regulators had to respond quickly to the urgent need to increase the healthcare workforce, but also consider any implications on public protection. We also had to react quickly to Covid-19's impact on the regulators and accredited registers we oversee. Find out more about the approach we are taking to our work here.

We will all need to re-focus our priorities in the coming months – doubly-difficult at a time when we are unsure what the future holds while still adapting to life where Coronavirus is a constant. We hope, however, that our next newsletter – due out in the Autumn – will find us all in more hopeful circumstances.

Covid-19 has impacted on how regulators are dealing with concerns and complaints, but we can still provide updates on recent appeals. Our regulator reviews are going ahead but they will be proportionate and take into account the impact of Covid-19 on the regulators' resources – find out more about this and the latest performance reviews published.

Collaboration and cooperation are important aspects of our policy work – even if it has to be done virtually. Our academic and research conference is likely to be our last face-to-face event for quite a while. However, we have adapted – we held two virtual meetings with regulatory colleagues. Covid-19 and its impact were of course the focus of discussions, but we also need to think about its wider impact on the way we regulate.

Accredited Registers have had to respond to Covid-19 and we’ve been working with them to help navigate the challenges they are facing. We have also recently announced a Strategic Review of the programme. It is the first comprehensive review of the programme since its creation in 2012.

Have you missed any of our blogs? Catch up here, recent blogs have looked at how the right-touch principle of agility has come to the fore as regulators responded quickly to set up emergency registers to urgently increase the health and care workforce. We also have several blogs focused on the role research can play in improving regulation.

This is not our usual round-up about regulators' consultations and reports recently published. Instead it gives details and links to all their Covid-19-related website hubs which include the latest updates, information and advice for registrants, students, employers and the public.
